The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has teamed with the Ohio Grocers Association to develop a Composting and Diversion Guide for grocers in Ohio. The guide allows grocers to develop an infrastructure for composting organics.

WHAT:
The partnership today announced the development of a Composting and Diversion Guide for grocers in Ohio. The guide will assist grocers in their plans and efforts to compost organics.
“With the help of a grant and a great working partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, OGA and OGF have been able to collaborate with grocers to develop an infrastructure for composting organics,” said OGA President and CEO, Tom Jackson. “Without ODNR’s help, this project would not have taken place.”
The Kroger Company was one of the first grocers to start a composting pilot program. To date, 44 stores are participating and 2,334 tons of organics have been diverted from landfills.
“Projects like this are all a part of encouraging our most innovative ‘green’ thinkers and putting their ideas into practice…creating a legacy that will go far beyond anything we are doing today, and benefit all Ohio for generations,” said Sean Logan, director of ODNR. Grocers can realize benefits from composting and diversion such as reduced solid waste disposal costs. Composting also relieves environmental concerns, as diverting organic materials from landfills is a primary goal. It can also help replenish soils.
Grocers, in their quest to be good community citizens, are embracing composting as another way to address the environmental concerns of the industry and their customers.
